We all have that one task we're avoiding. You know the one. Maybe it’s that report that’s sitting untouched, or a difficult email waiting in drafts. So, instead of tackling it, we take a “productive” detour—a quick break to, organize the desk, or (yes, even) scroll LinkedIn for inspiration.
Does the task get done? Not quite.
Here’s an idea: try taking a cold shower, 🧊🚿or if you are at work, dunk your hands into cold ice water.
According to Dr. Andrew Huberman, “When you complete a task that requires a high degree of effort, especially one that’s uncomfortable, you get a hit of dopamine. It makes you feel rewarded, increasing your motivation to take on more challenges.” So, by tackling something even harder than the task you're avoiding, you can generate the energy and mental shift needed to dive in.
Cold showers are just one way to break through avoidance and build accountability with yourself. They train you to handle discomfort, push past mental barriers, and face the tasks that hold real value.
Next time you’re putting off that big task, try giving yourself a challenge—a cold shower, a quick workout, or something that feels tough but achievable. You might find yourself finishing that task you’ve been avoiding with a whole new level of focus and confidence.
